Claude Cowork: The AI Coworker That Actually Touches Your Files

For years, AI tools have lived in the browser: you paste in some text, get an answer back, then copy‑paste into your “real” work tools. Claude Cowork breaks that pattern. It is Anthropic’s new “agentic” mode inside the Claude desktop app that can plan and complete multi‑step tasks directly on your computer.

Instead of chatting in isolation, Cowork runs against a specific folder or workspace. You tell it the outcome you want—“turn these receipts into an expense sheet” or “summarize this research and draft a brief”—and it creates, edits and organizes actual files to get there. It can manage documents, spreadsheets and slides, clean data, and stitch everything together into finished work products.

In January 2026, Anthropic took this further by launching a plugin system for Cowork. These plugins bundle skills, connectors and slash commands so Cowork can act as a specialist for domains like legal, finance, sales, marketing, data and biology. For example, the legal plugin can review contracts, flag risky clauses and track compliance against a team’s existing playbook, while sales and marketing plugins help research prospects, draft campaigns and prep deal materials.

If you want to see Cowork in action, there are already several public demos. One walkthrough shows Cowork reorganizing a cluttered desktop, automating market research and even attempting video‑editing steps on a creator’s machine. Another long‑form demo focuses on building a content engine, where Cowork turns raw notes and transcripts into structured documents inside a project folder.

Together, Cowork plus plugins mark a shift from “ask a chatbot a question” to “assign a project to an AI coworker that actually touches your files and tools.
